The Four Catagories Of Herbs

Herbs can be classified into four basic catagories - aromatics, muscilants ( sweet ), bitter (salty)

astringents (sour).

Aromatics or volatile oils:

..will evaporate at the presence of heat. The heat releases the plants fragrance. These fragrances tend to stimulate the nervous system. Many volatile oils ,historically, greatly benefit the physical and emotional needs. These oils tend to stimulate the,intestinal secretions, hormones and hydrocloric acid. Theses types of herbs also enhances the cirulatory system and help build mucus membrane secretions. Ginger, Garlic, yarrow, camomile, and valarian are a few aromatic herbs that fit this catagory.

Mucilants (Sweet)

This type of herb, usually loaded with vitamins and minerals, tend have the mildest on the body. Mucilant herbs absorb large amounts of water. One main type of mucilant is Psyllium. When water is added to a mucilant a gelatinous substance is formed. This gelatinous substance is called mucilage. Aloe vera is a great example of mucilant herb. Other herbs in this catagory include, licorice, dong quai, wild yam, ginseng and sarsaparilla.

Bitters (salty)

Bitter herbs are considered cleansing herbs. As a rule, bitter taste can begin the digistive process which starts "the pruge of impurities" from the digestive tract.

This type of herb contain large amounts of oxigen. Its the oxygen that break down substances in the body. Also saponins found in the bitters are the compounds that aid in intestinal and innerbody cleansing. Cascara sagrada is and excellent example of a bitter herb. Senna, golden seal, lobelia and yucca belong in this catagory.

Astringents ( sour)

Rich in hydrogen and drying abliity, astringents tone, tighten tissues. This type of herb containg flavonoids- plant compounds with vitamin like properties and antioxidant affect are also diuretics. Prime example of astringent herbs include, black walnut,uva ursa, dandelion, juniper and white oak bark.
